Faculty of Education BNU Attended 2018 AERA Annual Meeting Published:2018-04-28 15:29:02  Views:10

 

From April 13 to 17, 2018, a delegation of Faculty of Education attended the 2018 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting in New York. A joint reception co-hosted by Beijing Normal University (BNU) and The University of Hong Kong (HKU) was successfully held on the evening of April 14.

 

The theme of the 2018 annual meeting is The Dreams, Possibilities, and Necessity of Public Education. About 20000 people attended the meeting and more than 2000 presentations were given. During the 5-day meeting, 6 faculty members and 3 students from Faculty of Education, BNU gave 10 presentations.

 

During the AERA meeting, FOE BNU and the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong successfully held a reception in New York Marriott Marquis Conference Centre on the evening of April 14. Nearly 300 guests from all over the world came to the reception. Prof. MAO Yaqing (Associate Dean of Faculty of Education, BNU) and Prof. Lin Goodwin (Dean of Faculty of Education, HKU) gave welcome speeches. Among the guests at this reception were Prof. Francis Becky (Dean of Institute of Education(IOE), Londons Global University (UCL), Prof. Brooks Clare (Associate Dean of IOE, UCL), Prof. Blye Frank (Dean of Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia(UBC)), Prof. Chris Hals(Associate Dean of Faculty of Education and Human Development, The Education University of Hong Kong), Prof. Tina Besley (Associate Dean of Faculty of Education, University of Waikato), Prof. Michael A. Peters (the chief editor of the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory) Prof. Lynn Paine (Associate Dean of College of Education, Michigan State University), Prof. Sarah Gravett(Professor of Faculty of Education, University of Johannesburg), Prof. Leonard LaPointe(Distinguished Professor of Francis Eppes, Florida State University), Prof. Bob McPherson(Dean of the College of Education, University of Houston), Prof. ZOU Yali (Professor of the College of Education, University of Houston). There were also many teachers, students, alumnus and experts from BNU, HKU and other academic institutes in the field of education attending the reception. The reception strengthened cooperation further among Faculty of Education, BNU and other researchers and academic institutes from all over the world. And it also expanded the international influence of Faculty of Education, BNU and Faculty of Education, HKU in the field of education. Faculty of Education, BNUs talent introduction policy, International Exchange and Cooperation Programme and the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) International Conference 2018 which will be hosted by Faculty of Education, BNU were spread to all the guests. At the reception, we sincerely thanked all the partners and alumnus from China and foreign countries who have been supporting the development of Faculty of Education, BNU all the time.

During the annual meeting, Prof. Mao Yaqing met with 6 groups of peers from other universities and partners from all over the world. They had extensive talks about promoting exchanges and cooperation.

 

At noon of April 13th, Prof. Mao Yaqing met with Prof. Peter Hlebowitsh, Dean of College of Education, University of Alabama. Both sides expressed the intention to collaborate on exchange programs, joint research and principal training, etc.

On the afternoon of April 13th, Prof. Mao Yaqing met with Prof. Diane Hess, Dean of School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison. They discussed the possibility of collaborations on carrying out joint research, principal trainings and joint courses, etc.

On the morning of April 14th, Faculty of Education, BNU organized a breakfast meeting for deans among INEI members. Prof. Mao Yaqing attended the breakfast meeting and exchanged views with other INEI members on the optimization of scientific research projects, new member nomination process, and the cooperation memorandum from 2018 to 2023, etc.

At noon of April 14th, Prof. Mao Yaqing met with Prof. Micheal Peters and Prof. Tina Besley, who are both the chief editors of the Journal of Educational Philosophy and Theory. They exchanged views on setting up new editorial committee and editorial team, the name and release time of a new BNU journal, and so on.

On the afternoon of April 15th, Prof. Mao Yaqing met with Prof. Maureen Gillette, Dean of College of Education and Human Services, Seton Hall University. Both sides explored the possibilities to work together on several programmes, such as faculty and students exchange, joint courses and principal training, etc.

On the evening of April 15th, Prof. Mao Yaqing met with Mr. Peter de Liefde, the publisher of Sense Press. They discussed the publication details of a new BNU journal.

On April 15th and 16th, Prof. Mao Yaqing and representatives of teachers from Faculty of Education, BNU attended several receptions hosted by College of Education University of Alabama, College of Education University of Houston, School of Education University of Wisconsin-Madison and Ontario Institute for Students in Education University of Toronto.

 

The delegations visit to the USA achieved the expected results, spread the academic achievements of Faculty of Education, BNU, expanded the international influence, improve the relationship between Faculty of Education, BNU and other academic partners such as The University of Hong Kong, enhanced the friendship with overseas scholars, and made new friends.
